In the UK, the temperatures have been relatively mild, but other regions like Europe, China, and the US have experienced scorching heat, reaching as high as 45°C. As global temperatures rise is it time to heed the warnings of Just Stop Oil? Or, with the public reception of climate activists rather lukewarm – if the prospect of deadly heatwaves aren't enough to get people on board, what should they try next? Protesting to the authorities or stopping the protests that irritate everyone else? What do you think? 'It was the same with suffragettes...' Just Stop Oil are highlighting that we are breaking multiple records for the heating of the planet (Metro, Tue). It is madness to keep licensing fossil fuels. We need drastic change. The pandemic proved we can do it when faced with a global crisis. We have a global crisis far more serious than Covid, which was incredibly serious and has a lasting impact with Long Covid. It was the same with suffragettes and anti-segregation protests in America in 1960s. Sit-ins in America were illegal and disruptive. Was it wrong? Striking is incredibly disruptive but a cornerstone of our collective rights and really important. Why is striking for pay OK but protesting for survival is not? Will people who oppose climate protesters be considered on the right side of history like those who opposed women's rights? (Picture: AFP / Getty) Drastic change to tackle the climate crisis is such a uniting issue. Or it should be. It is life and death. Devastating and lasting, it needs action. If the only way is a peaceful slow march or spraying some paint to try to force action and change then that's what needs to happen. Other methods are not working.
