 A tourist from the USA has been detained by North Korean authorities after crossing the military border without permission. He entered the country from South Korea, the authorities have confirmed. The man was reportedly taking part in a tour to the Joint Security Area (JSA), which is the border village in the demilitarised zone separating the two Koreas where soldiers from both sides stand guard. Known as the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), it marks the border between North and South Korea. It is also sometimes known as the 'Armistice Line' and was introduced at the end of the Korean War in 1953. The United Nations Command said in a statement on Twitter: 'A US National on a JSA orientation tour crossed, without authorisation, the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). 'We believe he is currently in DPRK custody and are working with our KPA counterparts to resolve this incident.' The Korean border line is marked by 1,292 identical signs at staggered intervals across the peninsula.
