An investigation was opened in 2021 after multiple reports of sexual harassment against female employees were prevalent within the franchise. The Commanders were hit with a fine of £8.7million ($10m) with owner Synder being instructed to step away from the team's day-to-day operations. They were then involved in a criminal investigation in which they were accused of financial malpractice for allegedly defrauding season ticket holders out of deposits and improperly withholding ticket revenue from NFL teams.
