The picture, which has been shared on Twitter and left people having nightmares and sleepless nights, is captioned: "Remember when I told y'all about the Philippines having human-sized bats? Yeah, this was what I was talking about." The photo, which was taken in the Philippines, is of a giant golden-crowned flying fox - a large fruit-eating bat native to the Asian archipelago. The bat is generally considered to be a megabat, but it's not as tall as many people feared. Although the flying mammal is significantly bigger than a UK bat, and can have a wing-span of up to 5ft5in, slightly above the average height of women in the UK, it itself only grows to a height of a round a foot, weighing around 1.2kg. It also has the longest documented forearm length of any bat species, measuring in at 8.5ins. But the reason it looks so massive is because of forced perspective, which is a camera trick that creates an optical illusion, in this case making the bat look abnormally large. However, this hasn't stopped people freaking out over the image, which now has over 58k retweets and over 234k likes.
