Harry Maguire stripped of Man Utd captaincy by Erik ten Hag

England defender says he is ‘extremely disappointed’ after manager makes his feelings about player’s future crystal clear

Harry Maguire has confirmed he has been stripped of the Manchester United captaincy after face-to-face talks with manager Erik ten Hag.

Telegraph Sport reported on Saturday that the England defender was the top target for West Ham United following their £105 million sale of Maguire’s team-mate Declan Rice, with the United centre-back known to be available this summer.

However, Ten Hag has made his feelings on Maguire’s future crystal clear by removing the captaincy from him, with the news announced by Maguire himself on his Twitter account.

Maguire said: “After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain. He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.
