Wayne Rooney details “crazy” MLS rule that saw him try to use Jesse Lingard to make money

Ex-Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will be in charge of an MLS All-Star side on Wednesday when they take on Arsenal in a pre-season friendly in Washington DC

DC United manager Wayne Rooney has revealed how he tried to use former teammate Jesse Lingard to exploit a “crazy” MLS rule.

The former Manchester United man took the role in Washington 12 months ago, with his side currently eighth in the Western Conference. And on Wednesday he’ll renew his rivalry with Arsenal, taking charge of an MLS All-Star side as the Gunners kick off their summer tour of America.

But despite relishing his stint in the US, Rooney has now spoken out against the ‘discovery’ rule which allows clubs to make money from players signing for opposition teams. Every MLS club can name up to seven players who ply their trade abroad, with Lingard one of the names on the 37-year-old’s list.

“You don’t know about “discovery” players? OK, take Erling Haaland,” Rooney told The Times. “We could put Haaland on our discovery list and it means that if he ever came to the MLS but let’s say wanted to play for one of the LA teams and not us, the LA team would have to pay Man City – and us. Because we’ve ‘discovered’ him! It’s crazy.”
