 The public is backing Huw Edwards to return to BBC News, according to a new poll. Last week, the 61-year-old broadcaster was named as the suspended BBC presenter at the centre of allegations following claims an unnamed BBC star had paid a young person over £35,000 for sexually explicit images. The Met police later confirmed there is no evidence of a crime being committed, while Edwards' wife released a statement on his behalf noting her husband was 'suffering from serious mental health issues'. She added that he 'is now receiving in-patient hospital care where he'll stay for the foreseeable future'. BBC director-general Tim Davie has since said an investigation at the BBC will 'continue'. According the Mirror's Survation poll, 53% of those responding wanted Edwards back on BBC News at Ten if he is cleared of serious wrongdoing. The BBC is conducting its own investigation aside from the alleged one from Newsnight. 'We are moving forward with our fact-finding investigations,' a spokesperson said. 'We are going to get on with this work calmly, carefully and with diligence, with full consideration of our duty of care to all involved. We will not be providing further comment while this work is ongoing.' Meanwhile, a number of Edwards' peers have expressed their concern for him.
