Police in Suffolk County, Long Island, reportedly have a suspect in custody in connection to the Gilgo Beach murders and police have been seen at the scene on First Avenue in Massapequa Park this morning, July 14. A source close to the investigation told the New York Post that the suspect is being looked at over the 'Gilgo Four' - four women who were found wrapped in burlap within days of each other in late 2010 - and not the other six who were thought to be connected. But who were the apparent victims? And how did the shocking story unfold? In May of 2010, 23-year-old Shannan Gilbert mysteriously disappeared from a gated community in Long Island after calling 911 in a panic. The subsequent search for her along a desolate beach road, Gilgo Beach off Ocean Parkway, found the remains of four bodies wrapped in burlap sacks around 150m away from eachother. These bodies were identified as Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Amber Lynn Costello, 27, Megan Waterman, 22, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25. These women, who were later found out to have been sex workers, were dubbed the "Gilgo Beach Four." The case made national headlines with the perpetrator named by the media as the "Long Island Serial Killer" or "LISK."
