Many were to do with "desensitising" the pets so that they are able to cope with unexpected or unusual surroundings. For example, one recommended playing with their ears from a young age so that they don't panic if they need ear medication. Another hack along the same lines is to touch their feet so they remain calm during necessary nail trimming. A third tip involved getting the pups used to loud noises, like thunderstorms or fireworks, which can often drive dogs wild with anxiety. To do this, the vets suggested using a YouTube clip of such noises at a low volume to get the pooches accustomed to them without scaring or distressing them. Likewise, a senior vet , Dr Danielle, said that owners should open up their puppy's mouth and gently touch their lips and teeth to make dental exams run smoother. While young dogs do nip occasionally, when paired with proper training this should be risk-free. Finally, two of the group discussed "socialising" the pups to make sure that they can interact with different types of people. Taking them to social events, puppy playdates and family gatherings are all good ideas. Make sure to allow them to interact safely with different types of people, for example children and the elderly, so that they are used to them.
