‘Which travel insurance will cover the air traffic control strikes in summer?’

✉ I’m off to Greece in August for a much-needed holiday with my family, but I’m worried that industrial action by air traffic controllers will ruin our plans. Which travel insurance covers air traffic control strikes?Daisy Beale

The good news is there are a number of policies that offer cover for severe flight delays and cancellations due to strikes. The bad is that you must have bought the policy before the strikes were announced (even if specific dates have not been set) or you won’t qualify for a payout. This is why it’s essential to take out insurance on the same day you buy your flights and accommodation. Direct Line, for example, has single and annual multi-trip policies that provide cover for missed, delayed or abandoned (usually after 24 hours) departures as a result of a strike (directline.com). Other companies with similar policies include the AA (theaa.com), Staysure (staysure.co.uk) and LV (Premier policy, LV.com).

Insurers will always insist that you try to recover your losses from another source first, and if your flight has been cancelled the airline is obliged to offer a refund or reasonable expenses and rerouting, even if it’s on a rival carrier.

✉ We’ve booked a Caribbean cruise on Oceania Insignia in November. Our return flight leaves Barbados at 21.50 on December 5 and we have to be out of our cabin in the morning. Can you suggest any hotels that do day rooms or activities where we can leave our luggage and make the most of the last day of our holiday?Janey Simpson

Try the Hilton Barbados, which offers “daycation” resort passes from 9am to 6pm for £47pp, including access to the beach and gym (but no room), two pools and a hot tub, plus a £24 food and drink credit. Or upgrade to a beach cabana, which will cost £157 for up to four people and includes a £59 food and drink voucher (resortpass.com). Getting a room is trickier, because December is the peak season. The Radisson Aquatica offers day rooms for £70 (room only) but these can only be booked 48 hours ahead (radissonhotelsamericas.com).
