David Moyes’ first Man Utd XI: International boss, World Cup scorer and retirement at 32

ON THIS DAY: Manchester United played Thai side Singha All-Stars in a pre-season friendly 10 years ago, marking David Moyes’ first game as manager after succeeding the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson

On July 13, 2013, David Moyes proudly led a Manchester United side out for the very first time.

After being chosen by none other than Sir Alex Ferguson, who’d announced his retirement two months prior and immediately selected Everton boss and fellow Scot Moyes to replace him, his first task was to take the reigning Premier League champions on a pre-season tour of Asia. In a hint of what was to come over the next 10 miserable months, it didn’t start well.

Yet it wasn’t any of Liverpool, Manchester City or Arsenal who inflicted the first blow, instead it was Singha All-Stars, a team made up of the best players from the Thai league. In the baking Bangkok heat, United’s stars slumped to a 1-0 defeat and have since had contrasting journeys on and off the pitch.

Join us, as Mirror Football takes a deep dive into what happened to Moyes’ first XI a decade on.
