At the start of July, the Met Office announced their month's forecast, warning of 'unsettled conditions' for many, particularly in the north of the country, although high temperatures were expected to continue. However, the extreme temperatures being witnessed across Europe might hold the clue as to why we are seeing rainfall. Speaking to Metro.co.uk, a Met Office spokesperson explained: 'A southern shift of the jet stream – which is a core of winds high up above the Earth's surface – has pushed high pressure southwards across Europe, whereas I am sure you are aware, they are seeing some very warm temperature at the moment. 'However, this has resulted in low-pressure systems being directed towards the UK, bringing more unsettled and cooler weather that we are currently experiencing here in the UK.' That said, the Met Office stressed that it is too early to tell if this rainfall is record-breaking or even particularly unusual, going on to say: 'While the UK has seen about half its expected July rainfall in the first 12 days of the month, it is far too early in the month to make any comment on whether it will be a record-breaking month or not.
