The survey of 2,000 adults found that 70% of Brits are not even aware such restrictions exist against displaying clothes outside – but 79% believe it is unfair, and should not be a rule. And 85% claim they would not be fussed if they spotted a line of clothes hanging out to dry while going about their daily life. As a result, more than a third (36%) say they would happily lend their own private outdoor space to renters in need, so they can dry their laundry outside. To help enable this, Smart PAYG energy firm, Utilita has launched a campaign with community app, Nextdoor.co.uk, to match affected tenants with homeowners willing to lend their washing lines. Seven in ten Brits say one of the best things about summer time is getting to hang laundry outside to dry â but nearly 1.5 million tenants across the UK are forbidden from doing this under their rental contract.
Brits typically four loads of washing a week during the warmer months â but 2.7 million renters do not have an outdoor space to hang them out to dry, even if they were allowed to do so.
