Paris prosecutors opened an investigation on Monday after the grisly gift was sent to the Élysée Palace, the official residence of the French president. Parquet de Paris, the capital's prosecution office, confirmed the probe today to the French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP). A source close to Macron's office said the package arrived sometime between Sunday and Monday. 'The finger was initially put in a fridge where the police put their snacks,' they said. 'This was to make sure it was preserved and could be analysed as quickly as possible.' The insider said that tests identified the finger as belonging to a 'living human finger' which was sent to the palace first class. Only the limb was posted to the president, the source said. No letter, note or any other form of written correspondence was mailed with it. 'It's not at all clear why this finger was sent to the president,' the source added, leaving investigators stumped. French weekly magazine Valeurs actuelles, which first reported the incident citing a security insider, said the owner of the amputated finger has been identified as the one who sent the mail. 'This immediately triggered the appropriate procedure for cases of distress, so that the individual in question could be taken in charge by the competent services and undergo the appropriate medical follow-up,' they added.
