Thales to build periscopes for Royal Navy Dreadnought submarines

A Scottish engineering tradition dating back to the First World War is being extended through a Royal Navy contract that will preserve 150 jobs.

Thales is to build the optronic combat system mast for the new generation of Dreadnought submarines. The agreement will secure the future of about 150 workers, most of them based at the Glasgow plant where the kit will be made.

Thales said the unique mast will combine visual sensors, digital radar for electronic warfare and communications capabilities into one design. It described the mast as an evolution of the traditional periscope with the capability to provide television quality visuals for the crew.

The £31 billion Dreadnought submarine building programme will produce four new nuclear submarines to replace the existing Vanguard class
