 A woman who was injured by the world's second-tallest rollercoaster has filed a lawsuit against the amusement park. Rachel Hawes, a 45-year-old woman who was injured by Cedar Point's Top Thrill Dragster in 2021 when a piece of metal struck her while she waited in line for the ride. In August 2021, Hawes got in line to ride the Top Thrill Dragster on a trip to the park with her father, Robert Edmonds, and other members of her family. As the family waited in line for the coaster, a large piece of metal flew off the ride overhead and struck Hawes. The piece of metal was revealed to be a proximity flag plate loosely fastened to one of the ride's cars. 'The proximity flag plate came off the Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster as a result of the bolts holding it in place becoming lose (backing out) and breaking, failing to hold the plate in its proper position,' the lawsuit reads. The lawsuit claims that Cedar Point was negligent for failing to notice the bolts were loose, as well as failing to provide guests adequate protection in the waiting area.
