John Higgins ‘has never got over’ match-fixing claims

John Higgins has told how unfounded match-fixing allegations at the peak of his snooker career may have accelerated his father’s death from cancer.

The News of the World alleged in May 2010 that Higgins had agreed to lose four frames in four matches in return for €300,000 (£261,000) during a secretly recorded meeting in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Higgins was suspended from the sport pending an investigation but after an independent hearing four months later he was cleared of the match-fixing allegations.

He was found guilty of failing to report the illegal approach and intentionally giving the impression he was prepared to act in breach of betting rules, and was banned from snooker for six months.
