Mark Rutte’s pending exit from politics could put the Dutch prime minister at the top of the list for the job
Joe Biden has a new headache when it comes to making his selection for the next secretary-general of Nato.
The US president may be having second thoughts about his top pick after Mark Rutte, the longest serving prime minister in Dutch history, announced he was quitting politics on Monday.
Nato leaders including Mr Rutte and Mr Biden are meeting for a summit in Vilnius today, where the Dutch leader and Rishi Sunak are scheduled to meet.
Faced with a lack of suitable candidates, Mr Biden recently convinced Jens Stoltenberg to extend his term as boss of the transatlantic military alliance until next year.
