US to lift ban on sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey in exchange for Sweden’s Nato membership

Talks between Biden and Erdogan break the stalemate on alliance’s expansion before Vilnius summit

The United States will send F-16 fighter jets to Turkey after the country agreed to finalise Sweden’s bid to join Nato.

President Joe Biden will urge Congress to give permission for the shipments to Ankara, Jake Sullivan, his national security adviser said on Tuesday, in what appears to be a quid-pro-quo for the Nordic nation’s entry into the military alliance.

It comes as Nato leaders meet this morning in Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital, for a key summit expected to result in new “Israel-style” security guarantees for Ukraine by its Western allies.

Jens Stoltenberg, Nato’s secretary general, has urged allies to agree to remove the requirement of a Membership Action Plan for Ukraine to become a member of the alliance in the future.
