Enter, perpetual stew. And yes, it's exactly what you think it is. Also known as 'forever soup' (yum), it's a type of stew or broth, where pretty much any food stuff is added into a pot, which is never (or rarely) emptied. It continues to happily simmer way as more ingredients are added in. In theory, it can last for decades. Perpetual stew actually harks back to medieval times – thought to be of Polish origin – but it's making a comeback on TikTok thanks to content creator, Annie Rauwerda. Annie, who is behind the social account @depthsofwikipedia, announced last month that she would be venturing into the world of never-ending stew. Despite it being mid-summer she says that for her, every season is soup season. 'This is the first day of the rest of my life,' she said in a video which now has over 300k views. 'I've always wanted to do it, I'm finally doing it, it's perpetual stew summer.' In another video, Annie shows how she began her stew – by inviting her friends over, each of whom brought an ingredient to add to the slow cook. Parsley, potato, onions, chives, celery, fennel and rice were all thrown in, but no meat is allowed in Annie's particular variety of 'community juice', as she calls it. 'I've been telling everyone I know, 'come over, bring an ingredient, add it to the pot,'' she says. And in a very wholesome twist, Annie's stew is now bringing her local community together. She made posters and flyers, inviting people to meet her in a park, where they could add to the stew, and take a portion for themselves. Now, the stew is offered up every Tuesday – or Stewsday, get it?
