The Ashes 2023 live, England vs Australia: latest scores from third Test, day four

Moeen Ali is gone, cleaned up by Mitchell Starc. England’s best batsman, Joe Root, is at the crease with Zak Crawley.

Steve James writes: Well, that didn’t work. Easy to say this with the benefit of hindsight but surely if Ali was going to be promoted to No 3, should he have not been a bit more positive? Bit of a nothing innings that, sadly.

Duckett is out, leg-before to Starc. He reviews but the DRS shows three reds. Moeen Ali is in at No 3, as Elizabeth Ammon wrote on this file yesterday. Ali has batted No 1 to No 9 in Tests. This is his seventh go at No 3; he averages 14.7 there.

Steve James writes: I was just beginning to wonder whether Australia had got their tactics right because the England openers were picking up singles with such ease, and then Starc traps Duckett in front. It was an odd review because it looked so plumb. As Mike Atherton commented, did he realise he was so far across his stumps? Probably not.

Moeen Ali at No 3 is an interesting decision, and you wonder how Harry Brook feels about it – one chance and back down the order!
