Why Britons see holidays as a ‘human right’

We might quibble over the price of milk, but even in a cost of living crisis, most will never give up their two weeks in the sun

We moan about interest rates and lose sleep over the rising cost of salmon, yet in the midst of a cost of living crisis there’s one thing we refuse to compromise on: holidays.

New research from the hospitality group Accor shows that Britons are prioritising overseas travel despite spiralling bills.

It suggests people are, on average, planning to take a total of three trips away between April to December this year, with a third willing to spend more on holidays in 2023 than they did in 2022.

Aiden McAuley, an Accor spokesperson, said: “This research shows the inherent value of travel to people today. Despite the current economic climate, the travel and hospitality industry plays a vital role to the great British public.”
