 Australia end the second day of the third Ashes Test 116-4 in their second innings, 142 runs ahead of England, with the match in the balance at Headingley. It was another action-packed day in this chaotic series, with England bouncing back somewhat after a disastrous start to Friday in Leeds. Joe Root was dismissed with the second ball of the day and fellow Yorkshireman Jonny Bairstow followed soon after, with the home side languishing at 87-5 as they tried to catch Australia's first innings total of 263. Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali tried to steady the ship, but the latter was out poorly as he was caught in the deep by Steve Smith for 21, with Chris Woakes out for a pretty loose 10 shortly after. Mark Wood swung 24 off just eight balls, but when he was gone, Stokes was at the crease with England 167-8 so it was down to the captain to save the day again. The talismanic figure was eventually caught by Smith on the boundary for 80, hitting five sixes along the way as he made the score respectable, only 26 runs behind. Stuart Broad had David Warner caught at slip by Zak Crawley in the third over for one, the 17th time the pace bowler has got his man in Ashes contests. The Aussies were unfazed and the pair of Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne were looking good before some madness ensued. Labuschagne tried to slog-sweep Ali and was brilliantly caught by Harry Brook in the deep, before Steve Smith came to the wicket and played a rash shot off the spinner, caught by Ben Duckett at mid-on.
