Wimbledon still waits for Carlos Alcaraz’s signature moment – and that could spell trouble for the rest

Top-seeded young Spaniard shows cuteness of touch that has led him to be nominated as the successor to Novak Djokovic

We must wait a little longer for the mesmerising champion-to-be Carlos Alcaraz to deliver a signature Centre Court performance.

Alcaraz strode onto hallowed ground intent on making a statement worthy of his No 1 seeding. Despite his straight sets victory over Frenchman Alexandre Muller, the fairest declaration is that the charismatic young Spaniard needs more acclimatising before he is ready to wrestle the crown from Novak Djokovic.

“I feel like I can be better. Today was not my best match on grass,” he self-assessed.

“I always say it doesn’t matter if you play a perfect match. You can be better.”
