Newcastle ‘consider revenge on Liverpool with new signing’ after Dominik Szoboszlai ordeal

Newcastle could be the team to watch in the race for Khephren Thuram Newcastle could reportedly inflict revenge on Liverpool by signing Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram. The Reds had been leading the charge for the 22-year-old Frenchman but the dynamic has now shifted after Jurgen Klopp made a late decision to trigger Dominik Szoboszlai’s time-sensitive release clause worth £60million. Newcastle had been considering a swoop for the Hungarian but they were beaten to the punch when Liverpool pounced unexpectedly last week to land the former Red Bull Salzburg playmaker. The Reds could yet sign another midfielder to join Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister at Anfield but for now, it’s understood they have cooled their interest in Thuram. That could be good news for Newcastle, however, as Foot Mercato say the Magpies are outsiders for the highly-rated France U21 maestro. The deal would also represent the chance for Newcastle to get one back on Liverpool after missing out on Szoboszlai given the Reds have been tracking the player in recent times. Liverpool have reportedly cooled their interest in Khephren Thuram Newcastle have Champions League football to look forward to next season and there is every chance that Liverpool could live to regret missing out on Thuram, if the Magpies were to get a deal over the line. Bayern Munich have also been credited with an interest in the Nice starlet but those reports are believed to be wide of the park. Thuram was recently left out of Nice’s promotional kit launch for the 2023/24 season, suggesting he might be off. No bids were anticipated by Nice until after the conclusion of the U21 European Championships in Romania and Georgia. Nice will now hand Thuram an extended break before welcoming him back to the south of France as preparations begin for the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign. Newcastle are still looking for midfield reinforcements despite signing Sandro Tonali from AC Milan in a club-record deal. Tonali can play as both a No.6 and No.8 but Newcastle may require some extra depth and quality if they are to succeed both domestically and in Europe this term.
