Sex offenders are using a new consent law to get their sentences reduced and even to be released from jail.
The much-heralded law, which came into force last month, was designed to ensure “only yes means yes” for sexual consent but has now been branded a “botch job” by critics.
Since the act was passed, a man who abused his 13-year-old stepdaughter has had his sentence cut from eight to six years by a Madrid court, while an English teacher who paid his students in return for sexual favours has been absolved of offences involving victims aged over 16 on the basis that they had given consent. According to the local press he will be released because of the time he has already served.
