The government has been accused of penalising motorists who did the right thing by going electric.
Jeremy Hunt confirmed today that green cars will need to pay road tax like any other on the road from April 2025 onwards.
The Treasury says the change will ‘ensure that all road users begin to pay a fair tax contribution as the take up of electric vehicle continues to accelerate’.
According to the Office for Budget Responsibility, the change – which has been dubbed the ‘Tesla tax’ – is forecast to raise £1.7 billion for the exchequer by 2027/28.
