A bum note on the opening night of the Ange Postecoglou homecoming tour. Celtic’s Australian manager has been love-bombed by the locals on this trip to New South Wales, but Sydney FC were reluctant to roll out the red carpet, producing a display which bristled with determination and intent to take the honours in the rather grandly titled Sydney Super Cup.
In fairness, for a mid-season friendly, this was a lively old affair and keenly contested. The hosts were generally the better team bar a 20-minute spell at the start of the second half when Celtic upped the tempo and, crucially, their accuracy, but it was in this very period that Mas Burgess, the Sydney FC midfielder, conjured the decisive goal from nothing.
