The Royal Ballet: A Diamond Celebration review — the classics shine the brightest in this all-star bash

★★★☆☆Split into three sections, this big and very mixed bill pays homage to the 60th anniversary of the Friends of Covent Garden. In the spotlight are works by nine choreographers, stretching from staple figures past (Frederick Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan) and present (Wayne McGregor, Christopher Wheeldon) to a quartet of highly variable world premieres by dance-makers new to the main stage. Still, much of the dancing is stellar and the evening ends on a high thanks to the glittering balm of George Balanchine’s Diamonds.

The curtain-raiser is a pas de deux from Ashton’s much-loved rural romantic comedy La Fille mal gardee, dating from 1960. On a completely bare stage Anna Rose O’Sullivan and Alexander Campbell initially look like prettily clad dolls, but their
