Arsenal £40m target endorsed by Jack Wilshere as Gunners prepare bid

Arsenal could reignite their interest in PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo in January, and Jack Wilshere has endorsed a move for the Netherlands international. The Gunners are expected to be active again in the winter and next summer as Mikel Arteta’s rebuild edges closer to the desired destination.Gakpo was heavily linked with a Premier League switch ahead of the season, most notably to Leeds United, Southampton and Manchester United. But Arsenal were also said to be in the frame, and Arteta is still looking to bolster his attacking depth to maintain the Gunners’ title challenge in the new year.PSV reportedly value Gakpo at £40m, a fee that hasn’t changed since the summer despite his electric start to the current campaign. And according to 90min, Arsenal scouts joined Chelsea and United counterparts in Amsterdam to watch the 23-year-old in PSV’s 2-1 Dutch Eredivisie win at Ajax.Former Gunners midfielder Wilshere is clearly a fan of Gakpo, selecting him in his World Cup fantasy team ahead of the tournament’s big kick-off on Sunday. The 30-year-old, currently Arsenal U18s head coach, has picked Gakpo alongside three of Arteta’s stars – Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka, England’s Bukayo Saka and Brazil’s Gabriel Jesus.JUST IN: Man Utd take first Cristiano Ronaldo action with poster removal Jack Wilshere clearly rates Cody Gakpo. He’s registered 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 appearances in all competitions for PSV this season, more direct goal involvements than Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.Arteta undoubtedly wants to bolster his wing options after Arsenal’s failed pursuits of Raphinha and Pedro Neto in the summer.
