Former NBA star Isaac Humphries comes out as gay to teammates in locker room

The 24-year-old became the first active male basketball player playing in a top-tier to come out as gay and has been praised by the NBA who have stated that they are ‘proud and grateful’ have him sharing his story

The NBA has stated that they are proud of former Atlanta Hawks player Isaac Humphries after the Australian came out as gay in a moving video to teammates released on Tuesday evening.

Humphries, 24, had released a video captured in the locker room of his current team Melbourne United, in which he told his teammates for the first time that he was gay, admitting how much he had struggled to come to terms with the fact and opening up on his personal struggles to accept his sexuality.

He told his teammates he had tried to take his own life during some “extremely dark times”, but now felt comfortable in opening up after joining the team and feeling so welcomed by the community.

Speaking in the heartfelt video, Humphries said: “A few years ago I fell into a very dark place, a very lonely play and I couldn’t be who I am, and I attempted to take my life. The main reason I was that low was because I was very much struggling with my sexuality, and coming to terms with the fact that I’m gay. And I hated it about myself. I was disgusted at myself.
