Donald Trump’s advanced age could be a significant impediment to his race to the White House, Republicans Overseas UK Chairman Greg Swenson said. The former US President will move closer to the age of 80 in 2024 like President Biden who is turning 80 later this year. Due to his old age and his limited ability to run for only one term, younger candidates like Republicans’ favourite Ron DeSantis could drench Donald Trump’s hopes of ever retaking office. The Chair of Republican Overseas, Greg Swenson, admitted on Jeremy Vine on 5 that he used to think Donald Trump was a vote-winner but he has changed his mind since the results of the midterm elections. He said: “I actually thought so over the last year or two.”So, I’ve been endorsing Ron DeSantis and also supporting other candidates as well in suggesting that a Ron DeSantis or a Mike Pompeo or a Glenn Youngkin – they’re all in their 40s. “Actually, Mike’s in his 50s. But a younger generation and especially a candidate that can serve two terms. I think people overlook that.” Ron DeSantis could scupper Donald Trump’s chances of ever retaking the White House (Image: GETTY) Greg Swenson says age could favour younger candidates like Ron DeSantis (Image: YOUTUBE/@JeremyVineOn5)Having already served one term as President, Donald Trump will also be limited to one term if he wins, as the US Constitution states “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice”.Mr Swenson said: “If Trump by some miracle won, he could only serve one term. It’s hard to drain the swamp – as he calls it – in four years, as we found out the last time. “Look, there’s a lot of reasons to support a new generation of candidates. “But I think the midterms made that point more obvious – that’s for sure. “And you’ve seen Republican pundits and donors especially back away from Trump. You’ve seen what happened with Rupert Murdoch and NewsCorp, they’ve definitely faded on Trump because of the midterms.”READ MORE: Trump speech’s sees him ‘meaner and desperate for fans’ Donald Trump will turn 78 in 2024 (Image: GETTY) Ron DeSantis has become the favourite among Republican after winning Florida by a landslide (Image: GETTY)For the first time since the January 6 Capitol riots, Donald Trump has seen Republican support dwindling in the aftermath of the midterm elections.Senior Republicans have started turning their back against the former President, with Congressman Adam Kinzinger and Trump’s former chief of staff Mick Mulvaney saying he will be a liability to the party’s chances of ever retaking to the White House.
