Michael Robb said the swimmer suffered "massive and unsurvivable blood loss" from a "single massive bite" after the attack on January 7. Kaelah's final moments were heard during an inquest, with pals describing her frantic cries for help. She was swimming with a group of friends on Waihi beach on New Zealand's North Island when tragedy struck last year. Her pals felt the current was too strong and headed back to shore but say Kaelah failed to follow them. Lifeguards who had been keeping an eye on them noticed that Kaelah was drifting out to sea but say she did not seem distressed or in any "obvious difficulty". They deployed a rescue boat but she was suddenly attacked as they made their way towards her. A friend told the coroner's court that Kaelah started panicking and waving her arms to attract attention whilst shouting 'shark'. They said: "Kaelah was really panicking and waving her arm around in the water before being pulled into the boat." The teen was conscious when she was pulled from the water as she yelled that she had been attacked by a shark. A lifeguard recalled seeing lots of blood in the water whilst a witness described seeing "something in the water" that looked like " seaweed or some other people" around the swimmer. Kaelah was rushed back to the shore where the witness helped apply pressure to her bloody wounds and a lifeguard used a tourniquet.
