NATO chief issues new statement after Article 4 talks with Poland

Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg has spoken to Polish President Andrzej Duda following reports that Russian missiles crossed into the country.Mr Stoltenberg said the military alliance was “monitoring the situation and allies are closely consulting”.It comes as Poland is considering whether to call for discussions under Article 4, which is triggered when a member feels threatened by another country. The 30 member states then start formal consultations but it does not mean there will be action. The Nato general secretary tweeted tonight: “Spoke with President Duda about the explosion in Poland. I offered my condolences for the loss of life.”Nato is monitoring the situation and allies are closely consulting. Important that all facts are established.”News that Russian missiles had crossed into Poland immediately prompted alarm amid fears of any escalation in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. However, little information is so far known about how the incident might have occurred.Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller did not immediately confirm the information but said top leaders were holding an emergency meeting due to a “crisis situation”.Polish media reported that two people died on Tuesday afternoon after a projectile struck an area where grain was drying in Przewodow, a Polish village near the border with Ukraine.MORE TO FOLLOW Nato general secretary Jens Stoltenberg (Image: GETTY)
