Thousands of Indians to be allowed into UK as Sunak tries to salvage trade deal

The PM will meet Indian PM Narendra Modi at the G20 summit in Indonesia on Wednesday, and is desperate to revive a crucial trade deal

Rishi Sunak has agreed to allow thousands of Indians to come and work in the UK as he attempts to revive talks on a trade deal.

The PM will meet Indian PM Narendra Modi at the G20 summit in Indonesia on Wednesday.

It had been hoped the two countries would have signed a trade deal by Diwali last month, but negotiations have slowed following a disagreement over visas.

Mr Sunak last night stressed that he “wouldn’t sacrifice quality for speed ” in the latest indication a deal may not be signed soon.
