No need to qualify for Champions League this season, insist Newcastle owners

Next big round of transfer spending likely to come in the summer, not in the January window

Newcastle United’s owners will not gamble to chase a Champions League place this winter, despite recently congratulating manager Eddie Howe for a brilliant start to the season.

Newcastle will resume their domestic campaign with a home tie in the Carabao Cup fourth round against Bournemouth on December 20. The team are third in the Premier League with just one defeat, away to Liverpool, from their 15 games.

But in conversations earlier this month it was agreed there would be no rash decisions made in the January transfer window and no alteration in pre-season expectation levels that targeted a top ten finish.

Instead of trying to rush Newcastle’s return to the Champions League after a 19-year absence,Telegraph Sport has been told the club’s hierarchy are sticking to the plan to achieve gradual and sustainable growth.
