From Bali to Belize, the idyllic holiday destinations it’s easy to emigrate to

As Indonesia launches a new ‘beach house visa’, here are eight amazing travel destinations where a permanent move is surprisingly easy

It’s that time of year when day-dreaming about fleeing to sunnier climes for an extended period gains a new intensity. And this winter, the thought of decamping abroad is more appealing than ever – the dark nights are creeping in, but no one wants to put their heating on, and celebrity chefs are teaching us how to use our microwaves. Yes, a second home on a paradise island (or really anywhere else) would be most welcome.

It’s good timing, then, that Bali has just made it easier to make the fantasy a reality with a new ‘beach house visa’ programme which automatically gives those who invest in a property on the island residency for 10 years. Of course, there are some conditions to the generous offer. To be eligible for the decade-long visa, visitors must show proof they have at least $129,000 (£112,000) in their bank account to spend on property in Indonesia, plus three years’ validity on their passport. Still, it’s not the oligarch-level of investment some countries require.

And Bali isn’t the only appealing destination trying to lure expats and boost their pandemic-battered economies. In Europe, Portugal has become something of a haven for international Bitcoin barons thanks to its remote working visas and tax rules, while further afield Thailand and Ecuador are making it easier for would-be residents alongside the classic business hubs of Dubai and Singapore. Meanwhile, the Costa del Sol may soon have competition as English-speaking Belize lobbies to become the choice of British retirees.

Here we round up eight destinations to which it’s surprisingly easy to move (though a healthy bank balance always helps) and the unique draws of each.
