Britain facing 10-day deluge as Atlantic jet stream to strike

After the mild weekend, temperatures will drop (Image: WX charts)The weather will turn ‘very lively’ as the tropical remnants of Hurricane Nicole collide with a Canadian winter storm sending a superspeed jet stream across the Atlantic. It will sweep up a barrage of cyclonic storm systems brewing in warm ocean waters unleashing a near-fortnight assault of wind, rain, thunder and hail. After the mild weekend, temperatures will drop as forecasters warn to wrap up for a bracing wind-chill.Jim Dale, meteorologist for British Weather Services, said: ‘The remains of Nicole will get mixed up into the weather systems and picked up by the jet stream which will pull low pressure from the Atlantic towards Britain.’We are looking at a disturbed pattern of wind and rain, although with the unstable atmosphere caused by tropical air bumping against cold air on the other side of the Atlantic, we may get some thunderstorms and hail associated with these lows as they come in.’This will all kick off through the start of the week, and it doesn’t look like settling down for the next week to ten days, during which the rainfall amounts will start to add up.’While heavy rainfall will put parts of the country on flood alert, it will replenish water reserves still struggling from the summer scorcher. Wind and rain-bearing lows hurtle towards Britain (Image: WX charts)However, it spells bad news for southern and south-eastern Britain which last week were under a raft of flood alerts and warnings.A change in wind direction will see northerlies shift milder southerlies amid warnings to get winter coasts ready.Mr Dale, author of Weather or Not? added: ‘There will be a bit of a windchill, so we will be back to jackets and brollies.’Government forecasters, while not yet issuing wind or rain warnings, have urged Britons to brace for a ‘volatile’ week. All the ‘ingredients’ are present to drive very unsettled weather into the second half of November. Cold winds plummet temperatures (Image: WX charts)Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said: ‘All the ingredients are there to spin these areas of low pressure into something very lively indeed.’A few computer models suggest something very lively just to the west of the UK for the early to mid-part of the week, and that is why we need to keep a close eye on what is going to happen with Nicole and how that will fuel the jet stream.’There is the potential for something really quite volatile.’As winds come in from the north, temperatures will drop from the near-20C highs of the weekend into single figures. Winds pick up around the west coast (Image: WX charts)Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: ‘We are going to see temperatures dropping off, it is going to be very unsettled at times.’A heavy band of rain sweeping through on Tuesday, that could cause some problems with some blustery winds as well.’A change in where our wind is coming from, from the northwest, does mean we are going to see temperatures taking a bit of a drop.’Thick fog shrouded swathes of the country this morning after mild temperatures plummeted overnight. The Met Office issued a fog warning across south-eastern Britain which remains in force until 10am.
