Social media verification is a tricky thing and Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk is learning that the hard way.
Ever since Twitter launched Musk’s brainchild, a Twitter Blue subscription for £7 per month, pranksters wasted no time in setting up seemingly verified fake accounts.
Hours after the new tier was introduced, the number of ‘verified’ fake accounts impersonating politicians, brands and other high-profile accounts skyrocketed with some disastrous real-world consequences.
Facing the prospect of alienating advertisers, the company suspended its Twitter Blue service and reinstated its ‘Official’ labels.
