Man Utd have a golden transfer opportunity after Barcelona green light

Manchester United now have a golden chance when it comes to re-signing Memphis Depay after Barcelona decided they’d let the attacker go in January. The Red Devils were linked with their former No 7 back in the summer. But a return to Old Trafford ultimately failed to materialise, with the player remaining at the Nou Camp instead.Back in the summer, it was common knowledge that Manchester United wanted to raid Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong – who was quickly earmarked as a top target by Erik ten Hag.Yet towards the end of the transfer window, it was also claimed the Red Devils were interested in re-signing Depay. The Netherlands international previously moved to Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven back in the summer transfer window of 2015, when Louis van Gaal ruled the roost. But he toiled for 18 months before being shown the door by Jose Mourinho, who flogged him to Ligue 1 titans Lyon.In the summer, it was suggested Ten Hag wanted to bring Depay back to Manchester at a time where Cristiano Ronaldo’s future was up in the air.Man Utd transfers: Ten Hag is going to sign his own Haaland Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag eyed Memphis Depay back in the summer (Image: GETTY) Man Utd may be able to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona with no need for a transfer fee (Image: GETTY) Man Utd failed to see the best of Memphis Depay during Old Trafford spell (Image: GETTY)Speaking last year, Depay opened up on his nightmare time in England. And he revealed he lost confidence under Van Gaal, while also claiming he had the confidence of the likes of Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic behind the scenes.”I’ve thought a lot about why it went wrong. The first season I had to adapt and it didn’t go well compared to my time at PSV,’ he said.”I lost a bit of confidence and I lost the confidence of Van Gaal and his staff.”It was hard for me. It was a very difficult period, I felt that I was training well and the players themselves did not understand it.”Pogba and Zlatan told me: ‘Why don’t you ever play?’ For me that was the confirmation that I had no chance.’And I realised that I didn’t want to be in a big club without playing.’
