EU admits fraud risk in travel scheme for Britons

Britons travelling to European countries risk falling victim to fraud when a new visa-waiver scheme begins, the EU has admitted.

Brussels is preparing to introduce the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (Etias) from November next year, with arrivals from outside the bloc required to apply online before travel.

Approval will be required to enter any of the 27 member states, with 1.4 billion people from more than 60 visa-exempt countries, including Britain, required to apply. It will cost €7 and last for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

The scheme will work in a similar way to the American Esta, which grants many holidaymakers visa-free entry to the States. Travellers will be urged to apply at least 96 hours prior
