Somewhere in the middle of the new series of The Crown, there’s a scene in which the Russian imperial Romanov family are dressed up in all their finery before being taken down into a cellar and shot to death. Or rather, the adults are shot to death. The kids are bayoneted. And I found myself reminded of it this week, while reading Hugo Vickers in Times2. He noted with disapproval that the series makes no mention of our own Princess Diana, eight decades later, being called “Squidgy” by her friend James Gilby. “An important event in this era,” he wrote, “ignored.”
