Sky Sports facing EFL rights battle with Nordic streaming giants

A battle for the English Football League’s TV rights is looming between Sky Sports and a new kid on the broadcasting block, the Nordic streaming giant Viaplay.

The platform is understood to be considering a bid for the EFL rights post-2024 which threatens Sky’s longstanding coverage.

Viaplay – owned by Nent group won the UK rights to show Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland’s European and World Cup qualifiers this year, and non-live coverage of England games. Subscribers have to pay £14.99 a month for sports content.

It already has a £2 billion eight-year deal with the Premier League for the Nordic rights and in Poland and the Netherlands.

However a report by Enders Analysis, which analyses broadcast media, last week suggested there are challenges ahead
