UK’s green farming plan isn’t enough for net-zero, study finds

The government has a hole in its plans for how farmers, tree-planting and peatlands will deliver the country’s binding net-zero goal, activists have said.

Figures obtained under freedom of information rules reveal how ministers appear to be drastically overestimating to what extent greener farming practices, the restoration of peat bogs and more woodland can contribute to the flagship target.

As the UK and nearly 200 other countries discuss how to accelerate climate change action at the Cop27 conference, campaigners said the figures show the government is making “wildly heroic” assumptions about farming and land use. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said only 42 per cent of the assumed reductions would be achieved by 2030, based on an analysis of present policies.
