Just Stop Oil protester woke street with ‘screams’ as she was arrested

Police officers arrest a Just Stop Oil protester (Image: Jack Hardy)Neighbours woke with alarm when a Just Stop Oil protester screamed as they were arrested after a police chase. The suspect had allegedly, along with other activists, tried to climb onto the gantry of the M25 in an act of protest against the use of fossil fuels.Jack Hardy, 21, filmed the moment police picked the woman up from outside an address and into a police van in Chevening, Kent, yesterday.Jack, who does not support Just Stop Oil’s actions, said: “There was a police car just outside my house. Someone was being pulled over by someone else.”And then when I was getting up and getting ready, I heard a lot of screaming and it was one of the protesters getting carried by three or four officers to their van. There was one being carried out by the police and another one with a camera filming the police carrying her.”The protester being carried can be heard crying and screaming while being placed in the van. Following her arrest, residents clapped for the police, Kent Live says. Just Stop Oil protests have happened frequently on M25 of late (Image: Just Stop Oil / PA Wire)Just Stop Oil is urging the government to halt new licences for the exploration of oil and other fossil fuels in the UK. Their protests have caused travel disruption across the country.Jack, who is an electrician, said: “I was late this morning at work because I couldn’t get out of my driveway because the police van was parked up there and I couldn’t move.”When we asked the police, they said they (protesters) were trying to get on the gantry over the motorway, they were trying to get over to that, and then they saw the police and they got back to their car and they drove off and the police chased them and stopped them just outside my house.”Kent Police confirmed five suspected activists were arrested at around 6.20am yesterday. This happened after their “proactive patrols stopped a suspicious car near Westerham and the M25 motorway.”A police spokesperson added: “Climbing equipment, harnesses, D-locks and banners have all been seized, and the suspects have been taken into custody.”Protests were taking place at multiple locations on Thursday but Kent Police confirmed at 7.50am on their Twitter ‘there are no current incidents involving activists on the road networks in Kent,’ adding, ‘Our officers are continuing to assist other forces in responding to any offences and disruption elsewhere.’A Just Stop Oil spokesperson said: “I hate the disruption we’re having to cause, I really do. We’ve tried stuff in April. What we’ve done in April, people won’t be aware but we went straight for the jugular.”We went to the oil terminals, oil companies went straight to them and the fact is, the media didn’t cover it. And this autumn, if we block the M25, if we chuck a can of soup over a painting, we get coverage.”
