Verstappen has made it perfectly clear he is not a fan of the new race weekend format, which has been tested at three races in each of the last two seasons and will be expanded to six in 2023
Max Verstappen again criticised the Sprint weekend format as it makes an appearance for the third and final time this season in the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Instead of the usual schedule, qualifying will take place in Sao Paulo on Friday after just one practice session. There will be another practice on Saturday before the Sprint, which will hand out points to the top eight finishers and decide the grid for the main race, which takes place as normal on the Sunday.
After three Sprint weekends trialled in each of the last two seasons, that number will be doubled in 2023 with the FIA clearly keen to add more competitive action to the race weekend format. Some racers and fans enjoy having more action on track, while others are not so pleased about the innovation.
Verstappen is very clearly among the latter group. “I’m just not a big fan of it, because I feel like we don’t really race,” he told reporters on Thursday. “Okay, there are a few points to get, but you also know that you can’t really risk it because the main race is where you really get the points.
