Ferrari’s title challenge in 2022 stuttered and faltered long ago for a wide range of reasons, but Leclerc has vowed he will do his best to make a better fist of it next season
Charles Leclerc feels there is still something to compete for in the final two races of the season despite Max Verstappen running away with the title.
Both the Dutchman and his Red Bull team have already made sure of both championships. But Ferrari still have a little more work to do to fend off Mercedes in the battle for second place, while Leclerc also wants to beat Sergio Perez to be runner-up in the drivers’ standings.
Beyond that, there is another reason why Leclerc wants to be as competitive as possible in these final days of the 2022 campaign. Not only is it important for he and his team to bow out on a high, but he also feels strong results can have an impact on their chances of a stronger title charge next year.
“My mind is mostly focused on next year,” admitted the Monegasque at an event in Sao Paulo on Wednesday. He added: “It is hard to predict exactly what will happen next year, and we will not keep focusing on others,” making it clear the battle with Perez for second place is not necessarily his priority.
