Rashford sends message to Southgate over preferred England role

Marcus Rashford: The Man Utd star told England boss Southgate where he is best (Image: Sky Sports Premier League/Twitter)Marcus Rashford has told England boss Gareth Southgate that he prefers to play as a wide forward after receiving a call-up to the England squad for the World Cup. The Manchester United forward produced a man-of-the-match display in their 4-2 win over Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup just hours after being named in the squad and told Southgate where he feels he is best utilised. The 25-year-old was in inspired form as he scored a fine solo goal to cap a memorable day after making it into Southgate’s 26-man squad. The United attacker was a constant menace for the Aston Villa backline and hauled his side back into the game to make it 2-2.Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland was present at Old Trafford to take in his performance along with United team-mate Harry Maguire and would have been impressed with the work rate and desire shown by Rashford. He faces a battle to be named in the starting XI for England’s World Cup opener against Iran with Harry Kane a likely starter, and Rashford dropped a hint over where he believes he is most effective after scoring his eighth goal of the season.”My aim is to get back to enjoying my football at the moment and scoring goals, so I can’t complain,” Rashford said.”If you watch me play, when I’m on the left I make runs into that position [centre forward] so I try and end up near the goal, that’s where the goals are scored so that’s where I want to be. The more often I do, the more goals I’ll score.”I’d probably say I’m more comfortable on the wing. A lot of the games with my back to goal, I need to improve on that and I think I’m alright at bringing others into the game. But when I have to hold it, that’s something I need to work on.”We’ll be bringing you the very latest updates, pictures and video on this breaking news story. For the latest news and breaking news visit: express.co.uk/sport/footballStay up to date with all the big headlines, pictures, analysis, opinion and video on the stories that matter to you.Follow us on Twitter @dexpress_sport – the official Daily Express & Express.co.uk Twitter account – providing real news in real time. We’re also on Facebook @dailyexpresssport – offering your must-see news, features, videos and pictures throughout the day to like, comment and share from the Daily Express, Sunday Express and Express.co.uk.
