Rail minister Huw Merriman says strikes have cost economy half a billion pounds

National rail strikes have cost the economy half a billion pounds and “badly needs to come to an end”, the new rail minister has said.

Huw Merriman insisted that the Department for Transport’s new ministers had “changed” their “tone” in the bitter dispute, providing a glimmer of hope that a resolution could soon be reached.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) called off three days of strike action – due to start last Saturday before continuing on Monday and Wednesday – at the eleventh-hour, saying it had secured “intensive negotiations with rail bosses”.

In his first speech since being appointed rail minister, Merriman said that the “only way you get through industrial action” is to talk and “not to make a political issue
