The midterm elections have proved to be a disappointment for the Republican Party, who had predicted a ‘red wave’ of support would sweep them to a major victory in Congress. While the Republicans did increase their share of seats in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, the result was far below the success predicted in polling data. Ahead of the elections, former president Donald Trump had suggested he intended to launch his third campaign to enter the White House, although this was likely pinned on an exceptional Republican performance in the midterms. Following the result, Trump has been branded the ‘biggest loser’ in US politics after he has consistently failed to secure electorate support.Speaking on The News Agents podcast, journalist Emily Maitlis said: ‘The difference between Ron DeSantis and Trump very simply is that Ron DeSantis got more votes than a Democrat – Trump didn’t do that.’When he became President, he didn’t actually get more votes than the Democrat he was standing against. Trump has lost the presidency, the House and the Senate in four years.’You could say he is arguably the biggest loser, in US politics, for 90 years in the Republican Party.’As soon as you start seeing the wins for Desantis, you start undoing all those perceptions.’US media appears to have echoed the remarks made by Ms Maitlis after a Fox News article also described the former president as ‘the biggest loser’.
